The best solar inverter is the one that matches your real load, your battery voltage and your solar panels. A bigger number on the box is not enough. Use the steps below before you compare models and prices.
1. Add up your load in watts
List the devices you want to run during an outage or on solar power, write down each device's watts, and add them up. Leave 20 to 30 percent headroom. Motors and compressors, such as air conditioners and water pumps, can need several times their running power for a moment when they start, so check the inverter's surge rating too.
2. Match the battery voltage
Home inverters commonly work at 12V, 24V or 48V. Higher voltage means lower current for the same power, which allows thinner cables and less heat. The battery voltage must match the inverter, and lithium batteries often also need a compatible communication protocol.
3. Choose the type: off-grid, hybrid or on-grid
An off-grid inverter runs the house from batteries and panels. A hybrid inverter adds grid input and can charge batteries from the grid. An on-grid inverter feeds the grid and does not run without it. For a home with unreliable mains power, hybrid and off-grid models are the usual choice.
4. Check the solar input
Look at the inverter's maximum PV voltage, current and the number of MPPT trackers, then confirm that your panel strings stay within those limits in hot weather.
5. Other points to check
- Pure sine wave output for sensitive electronics.
- Parallel capability if you may expand later.
- Warranty and local support.
- Installation by a qualified technician, with proper breakers and cables.

Frequently asked questions
How many amps can an inverter run?
Add the watts of your devices and compare the total with the inverter's continuous output. Amps depend on the voltage, so check the watts first.
What is the difference between hybrid and off-grid inverters?
Both can run from batteries and panels. A hybrid inverter can also use the grid, for example to charge the batteries.
Is a bigger inverter always better?
No. It should match your load and battery bank. An oversized inverter costs more and may use more standby power.
